For Florida’s Alex Ducenord, better known to the Hip-Hop community at large as DJ Slym, a lifelong passion for music combined with tremendous persistence and perseverance have led to the music industry inroads he’s always dreamed about.
As a 12-year-old growing up in the coastal Palm Beach County community of Delray Beach Florida, “Lil Slym” had early designs of being a lyricist while falling in love with hip-hop, Dance, R&B and Haitian music, as well as admiring the Dj skills of South Florida Dj legends like Uncle Al, Slic Vic and the Jam Pony Express DJs.
After releasing a Creole version of “Peanut Butter & Jelly” that gained local popularity and touring with the Original creators of the popular dance song, Slym parlayed his burgeoning reputation into his own DJ position and quickly found a natural fit:
“I started DJ’ing when I was about 16 years old. I called up to this underground radio station ran by Dj Amazin B in Delray every single day for like a month straight until he finally told me to come up to the station. From there it was a wrap. I use to go up there religiously to DJ on air and then practice in my other homie Dj Mookat’s DJ’s garage. Seeing that this was actually something I was really good at inspired me to take it more serious.”
Upon graduating from Spanish River High School in 2002, Slym enrolled at Valencia State College where he would graduate in 2005 with degrees in Music Production, Sound Reinforcement and Business. It was during this time at Valencia where Slym would become 1st Board Operator at Orlando’s Power 95.3FM in 2004, the beginning of many major moves to come.
