When you hear about the 90s. What does that mean to you? What type of memories spark in your mind? Was it the music? Was it the fashion? Was it that memory of when you first got a taste of your cinnamon apple? Whatever it was to you, makes that period in time more special.
Zoey Dollaz, born in 1990, spent his first ten years of existence in the 1990’s. Kids that age are like sponges. Absorbing everything in their surroundings. The 90’s is considered by many to be the golden era of Hip Hop. That was the decade Hip Hop reached its adolescent stage. It didn’t need its mommy’s had to cross the street because Hip Hop started exploring more of the world on its own. Hip Hop was free to do what it wanted.
So on the road it went and Hip Hop started leaving its own mark outside of New York. Different styles emerged from each region. It was no longer limited to the sounds and sights of LA and NYC. Of course, at the time, the New York scene was the most dominant, but more and more cities started to hold their own weight and creating their own sound. From Chicago to Cleveland or from Miami to Houston, there were more flavors emerging from the pack in each city.
Let’s take it back to the young Zoe. A North Miami resident with a Haitian background must’ve had his ears on the music scene since he came home from the hospital after being born. With The New 90’s project, Zoey Dollaz has managed to bring all the good things that existed in the 90’s and rolled it into one album. Most songs may have a heavy trap influence with a sample laid underneath the southern style drum patterns. But wait, this isn’t the 90s sound I remember! That’s because it’s not supposed to sound like the 90s you remember. Those days are long and gone. These are the New 90s, a remixed version of everything we enjoyed in those days. (Am I sounding old yet) Before I start going into my “good ole’ days” speech, I just want to say that Zoey Dollaz, a product of Miami hip hop with an understanding of the original 90s sound, put together a great project with dope instrumentals and managed to stay on the subject matter without an overwhelming amount of drug talk (a talent which is rarely seen now) for the songs he chose to put on this 7 track EP. Listen to it and enjoy it. I know this old man did. Now back to the good ole days….
